    Default Unmarried couple and custody

Does a mother automatically have full custody of children in a situation where the couple has never married, but the father is named on the birth certificates? They have been living together for two years and have recently split, and her mother claims he has no rights because they never married.

Basically, that is correct. A father has rights but they are completely undefined until a court enters an order.
