Temp Custody
I am in the Army, and my cousin asked me for advice about joining the Army. She is a single mother, therefor cannot join without giving custody of her child to a responsible person, preferably the child's father. Although in her case, the father is not responsible, has been in jail numerous times and has a history of being on narcotics. She would rather her child be kept with her mother for a short period of time, till she is eligible to get custody of her child in the Army. She is showing a sense of responsibility to move forward with her life, gain an income, and be a good role model to her child. What would be some of her options to help her give her mother custody of her child for a short period of time. I am told the father does not want her to give her mother custody, even with visitation rights.

There is a mechanism to give custody to an extended family member. But it is not intended to be used if a parent presents opposition.
The only other method is to accuse him of being an unfit parent - very messy.
