father wants to force name change
I am seeking information to help my daughter. She has a 6 year old son by a man I will call "Dick". They were dating prior to her getting pregnant but broke up shortly after (his choice). He initially denied paternity, however some time after the birth he requested a DNA test which my daughter agreed to. The test confirmed him as the father (she never had a doubt). "Dick" was not around at all nor involved for the first 2 - 3 years of my grandsons life. "Dick" then decided to get involved and a visitation agreement was agreed to through mediation. A couple of days ago my daughter was served with a request for a modification
of the visitation and to change my grandsons last name to his instead of his mothers. Both parents provide a safe and healthy environment for the child when he is under their care so there are no significant mitigating circumstances. What are the chances of his petition for name change being successful? What does my daughter need to do (she can not afford to hire an attorney) to help prevent the name change.
They are both currently located in the same county in the state of Florida.
I am currently attempting to review Florida case law regarding this situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated as we have to respond within the next 10 - 12 days. Thank you.

A name change under this circumstance would be very difficult for him to get. There would have to be more reasons other than his newly awakened desire to have a greater role.
