Who's responsible for credit card debt?
Hi! I got separated from my husband last April. While we were together, he was using my credit card to purchase product that he was reselling on his website. I never was happy with him doing it, but I had no choice: his credit was poor and he convinced me that was the only way for him to run his business. We accumulated the debt of $6300 on the credit card. After I left, I allowed him to use my card for a couple of more months under certain conditions, so he can stand back up on his feet. He didn't follow the terms and I took the card away from him. At the time the balance was over $9000, and he refused to pay it, saying if he had paid it he would have got broke. I thought it would be fair for me to pay half of $6300 debt (half of balance at the moment of separation), for him to pay the other half plus what he put on the card after we separated, which added up to over $6000. I had him sign a letter saying he would pay me back, $200 a month plus all the bank fees, until it's paid off. He paid for two months, and then stopped. I was waiting for him to start repaying, but in the meanwhile i was charged a lot of money in bank fees, plus I had to make minimum payments myself. For over half a year now, he hasn't been paying and I went ahead and paid the debt off, because I didn't want all the fees, plus i'm preparing to buy a house so i couldnt have this debt. The question is, if my husband can be legally responsible for half of the balance on my credit card at the moment of separation PLUS what he put on it after i left IF THE NAME ON THE CREDIT CARD IS MINE. or he's going to get away with it and i will have to eat it?
Appreciate your time,
Viktoryia

Any debt run up on credit cards after separation are the responsibility of the person that ran it up.
In a divorce the court will normally have you pay the debts but compensate you with a larger share of some assets.
