Eastern cultures could provide clues to preventing divorce
12/28/2011
Australian researchers are examining whether Eastern cultures could offer the West some pointers on preventing divorce and promoting longer marriages.
Professor Kim Halford, a lead researcher at the University of Queensland’s School of Psychology, noted that Chinese cultures traditionally have low rates of divorce. He commented, “This study may help to uncover some of the factors that help Chinese couples achieve harmonious relationships.”
He points out that Chinese couples tend to value good relationships with their extended family, doing a duty to their partner and preserving the dignity of their spouse. Western couples tended to see themselves as separate from the extended family, the researchers found, whilst Chinese couples were more likely to pay attention to working together to create a good life and a sense of “togetherness”.
He contrasted this with Western relationships, where he said the focus was primarily on romance, passion and self-expression.
He said, "While these are good qualities to have in a marriage, it is important for couples to have a sense of belonging to their wider family and to commit to the work of making the marriage last.” He added that Chinese marriage values were likely to lower the risk of divorce.
