Mcgraw wishes she had asked for larger divorce payouts
01/09/2012
Actress Ali Mcgraw has spoken about her famous divorces, branding her ‘romantic’ attitudes towards her divorces ‘stupid’.
Speaking to Town and Country Magazine, Mcgraw said she now wishes she had claimed larger divorce settlements from her ex-husbands - who include the late, great Steve McQueen - in order to provide her with more financial security.
She told the magazine: "I had a romantic, 'Aren't I a good girl?' take on divorce, but the truth is that was stupid.
"When one stops working at the height of one's career, it's just stupid not to say, 'I want to make sure I have a house.”
She added, “I haven't made a living lately at all. I'm much more famous than I am rich, but I'm able to scale back my lifestyle.”
The actress was first married to Robin Martin Hoen – but the marriage broke down after just two years. Her second marriage to producer Robert Evansin in 1969 also ended in divorce after four years, despite the couple having had a son together. She then married Steve McQueen, but divorced in 1978. She claims she received no settlement from McQueen and, as a result, struggled to maintain her lifestyle in the years that followed.
